EU to allow products from Bangladesh duty & quota-free into its market

Dhaka-- – United Kingdom is eager to help Bangladesh in developing different sectors, ceramics and information technology in particular, as a fruitful development partner of Bangladesh.


This was disclosed in a business meeting, held here yesterday (Tuesday), between the leaders of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and the visiting business delegation from North Staffordshire Chamber.


The European Union (EU) has agreed on principle to allow products from Bangladesh duty-free and quota-free into the market of the EU, the meeting was told by Clive Allcorn, Head of Commercial Section of the British High Commission in Dhaka.


Explaining quota-free and duty-free access of Bangladesh products to the EU market, he said: Bangladesh has been doing very well on the UK market because of their huge success in readymade garments (RMG).


Presided over by DCCI President Benajir Ahmed, the meeting was also attended, among others, by past president and members of the DCCI Board of Directors.


The North Staffordshire Chamber delegation comprises 8 members representing sectors like tractors and agricultural machinery, machinery for ceramic industry, machinery for ceramic tableware and glass decoration industry, ceramic sanitary ware and sanitary taps and fittings, hardware, software and IT training, electrical appliances including laboratory machinery.


Terming UK a reliable and long-term business partner of Bangladesh, the DCCI president said the visit of the British trade mission to Bangladesh would open up a new window for exchange and sharing views and ideas.


It would find out ways and means to expand and deepen trade and economic relations and to exploit the existing potential for mutual benefit, he added.


The chamber leader also underscored the need for improving efficiency and technology of production to world standards and sought help from the UK in terms of technology and market.


He mentioned that in 1999-2000 fiscal year, Bangladesh exported goods worth about US $ 500.05 million to the UK and imported goods worth about US $ 225.67.


Leader of the British trade mission Tim Hiscock gave a brief resume of the delegation and elaborated their objectives.


DCCI past president R Maksud Khan and Aftab-ul Islam, DCCI Directors Matiur Rahman, Nurul Alam, MA Momen, Zainul Abedin, Syed Mosharraf Hossain and Magfur Rahman and delegation member Adam Slater also spoke.
